How to Create a Multiple Choice (Multiple Answer) Quiz Question
When building a quiz, there are times when a single correct answer isn’t enough — you might want learners to select multiple correct responses. Let’s walk through how to create a multiple-choice quiz question that allows for multiple correct answers.
Step 1: Add a New Question
Start by selecting Add a New Question.
Choose Multiple Choice, then click Add.
Next, you’ll give your question a name. In this example, we’ll call it Question 3. Keep in mind that the order of questions can be rearranged later, but for now, we’re setting it up as the third.
Now, let’s input the question text:
“What are the primary building blocks for vector illustrations?”
Set the Question Status to “Ready” and leave the Default Mark at 1 point. You can also leave the General Feedback field as is for now.
Step 2: Configure Question Settings
Here’s the important part:
- One or multiple answers? → Select Multiple Answers are allowed.
- Enable Shuffle the choices to mix up the order each time it’s shown.
- Keep the answer numbering as A, B, C, D.
Step 3: Add the Answer Choices
The question we’re working with offers five answer choices:
- Points
- Lines
- Curves
- Shapes
- Photos
Of these five, four are correct (Points, Lines, Curves, and Shapes), and one is incorrect (Photos).
Because multiple answers are correct, we need to set the grading accordingly:
- Each correct answer should contribute 25% towards the total (since 4 x 25% = 100%).
- For the incorrect answer (“Photos”), we assign it a value of -100%.
Why?
If a student picks an incorrect answer, we want to penalize the total score enough to prevent them from receiving credit for simply selecting everything. Without the -100% penalty, they could select all answers, including the wrong one, and still score 100%.
Here’s how the grading should be set:
- Points → 25%
- Lines → 25%
- Curves → 25%
- Shapes → 25%
- Photos → -100%
If needed, you can add more answer choices by clicking Blanks for 3 More Choices.
Step 4: Fine-Tuning (Optional)
You have options to provide:
- Combined Feedback (for correct, partially correct, and incorrect responses)
- Multiple Tries settings (you can apply penalties or hints if students get it wrong the first time)
If you allow multiple attempts, you can offer hints or gradually guide learners toward the right answers without simply giving them away.
Step 5: Save and Preview
Once all your answers and settings are in place, click Save Changes.
You can preview your quiz question by clicking the preview icon. This allows you to double-check that:
- All correct answers are listed.
- The incorrect answer is properly penalized.
- Everything displays as intended.
Recap
And that’s it! You’ve created a Multiple Choice with Multiple Answers quiz question. By carefully assigning percentages and penalties, you ensure that your learners must really know their material — no guessing or selecting everything to get full marks.
Happy quizzing!
