Unlock Engaging Learning: A Deep Dive into H5P Course Presentation in Moodle

Welcome back to our H5P series! If you’re new to H5P, be sure to check out our introductory video (link in the description) to understand what these versatile activities are all about. Today, we’re focusing on one of the most powerful H5P activities: the Course Presentation.

Think of the H5P Course Presentation as a dynamic, interactive alternative to traditional PowerPoint. It allows you to create engaging slide-based content, seamlessly integrating various media and interactive elements to keep your learners hooked.

What is the H5P Course Presentation?

At its core, the Course Presentation is a collection of slides, much like a typical presentation. However, the interactivity is where it truly shines. Let’s explore some key features:

  • Slide Navigation: A convenient slide bar at the bottom displays all your slides, allowing for easy navigation between them. You can also use arrow buttons to move sequentially.
  • Customizable Backgrounds: Each slide, or a group of slides, can have its own background image or color, allowing for visual differentiation and thematic consistency.
  • Full-Screen Mode: The full-screen button ensures your presentation scales beautifully, providing an immersive viewing experience.
  • Interactive Content: This is where the magic happens! Within each slide, you can embed a wide array of interactive elements, including:
    • Quizzes (multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blanks)
    • Drag-and-drop questions
    • Text input fields for open-ended questions
    • Embedded videos (e.g., YouTube)
    • Hyperlinks to external resources
    • Shapes for visual organization and division of content
  • Branching Scenarios: You can create “Go to Slide” buttons that allow learners to jump to specific slides based on their choices or progress, enabling non-linear learning paths.
  • Summary Slide: Optionally, the presentation can conclude with a summary slide, providing learners with a clear overview of their results on graded activities.

Building Your Own H5P Course Presentation

Let’s walk through the process of creating a Course Presentation within Moodle.

  1. Access Your LMS: Log into your Moodle instance and navigate to the course where you want to add the H5P activity.
  2. Add Activity: Turn on editing mode, then click “Add an activity or resource” and select “H5P.”
  3. Name Your Activity: Give your activity a clear and descriptive name, for example, “Course Presentation Experiment.”
  4. Content Bank: Go to your content bank and select “Add,” then choose “Course Presentation.”

Adding and Customizing Slides

Once you’re in the Course Presentation editor, you’ll see a range of tools at the top for adding content and controls for managing your slides at the bottom.

  • Adding Slides: Simply click “Add new slide” to create as many slides as you need.
  • Adding Text: Click the “Text” icon, type your content, and easily reposition or resize the text box by dragging or entering exact position and size values for precise alignment. You can also duplicate text boxes using “Copy” and “Paste” for efficiency.
  • Slide Backgrounds: Under “Slide background,” choose an image or a solid color. You can apply this to all slides or just the current one.
  • Adding Hyperlinks: The “Link” option allows you to embed clickable links.
  • Adding Images: Select “Image,” add your picture, and remember to provide alternative text for accessibility. You can then resize and reposition your image on the slide.
  • Adding Shapes: Shapes can be used for visual emphasis or to divide your slide into distinct sections. You can customize their fill color and other properties.
  • Layering Elements: Use “Bring to front” and “Send to back” options to manage the layering of your text, images, and shapes.

Incorporating Interactive Elements

The true power of Course Presentation lies in its interactivity.

  • Adding Videos: Choose the “Video” option, paste a YouTube URL, and select “Insert.” You can adjust settings like showing player controls or autoplay (though autoplay is generally not recommended).
  • Go to Slide (Branching): This powerful feature lets you create navigation points to specific slides. You’ll typically place some text (e.g., “Go to Slide One”) and then overlay the “Go to Slide” button, ensuring the button is “Bring to front” so it’s clickable.
  • Interactive Content (Quizzes): On your final slides, you can add various interactive question types:
  • Multiple Choice: Pose a question and provide multiple answer options, marking the correct one.
  • Drag and Drop: Set up drag zones and draggable elements (text or images). This is a more complex but highly engaging activity. Remember to ensure your drop zones and draggable elements are sized correctly to be visible.

Behavioral Settings and Review

Before saving, explore the “Behavioral settings.” Here you can:

  • Hide Summary Slide: If you don’t want a results summary, you can turn this off.
  • Text Overrides: Customize the default text for various components within the activity.

Finally, save your Course Presentation. Test it thoroughly by navigating through the slides, trying out the interactive elements, and checking the summary (if enabled). Ensure all elements are visible and function as intended, making any necessary edits to sizing or positioning.

The H5P Course Presentation is an incredibly versatile tool for creating dynamic and effective learning experiences within Moodle. Experiment with its features, and watch your engagement levels soar!
