How to Add a Single-Answer Multiple Choice Question to Your Quiz

When building an online quiz, multiple-choice questions are one of the most popular and effective types of questions to include — especially when you want to assess specific knowledge with a single correct answer. In this post, I’ll walk you through the process of adding a multiple-choice question that allows only one correct answer.

Let’s dive right in!

Step 1: Add a New Question

First, navigate to your quiz and go to the Questions section. Click Add, then select Multiple Choice and hit Add again.

You’ll be prompted to fill in some important details:

  • Question Name: To stay organized, it’s helpful to name your question based on the quiz name and its number. For example, if this is your second question, name it accordingly.
  • Question Text: Enter the actual question you want students to answer. In our example, the question is: Which software product is used primarily for vector graphics?

You can also add a note like “Choose one answer” to make it crystal clear for students that there is only one correct option.

Step 2: Configure Question Settings

Set the following options:

  • Question Status: Mark it as Ready.
  • Default Mark: Set the default score, typically 1 point.
  • General Feedback: This section allows you to provide feedback after students answer the question. It’s optional but useful for learning reinforcement.
  • ID Number: You can leave this blank if you’re not using it.
  • One or Multiple Answers: Choose Only one answer.
  • Shuffle the Choices: Enable this option to randomize the answer order for each attempt.
  • Number the Choices: You can decide if you want choices labeled A, B, C, D, or left unnumbered.
  • Show Standard Instructions: It’s helpful to enable this option as it provides clear guidelines to students.

Step 3: Add the Answer Choices

Now, input your answer options:

  1. Adobe Illustrator — This is the correct answer. Set its grade value to 100%.
  2. Adobe Lightroom — No grade needed.
  3. Adobe Premiere Pro — No grade needed.
  4. Adobe Photoshop — No grade needed.

Pro Tip: Initially, we accidentally entered “Adobe Lightroom” twice. A quick edit corrected it to “Adobe Photoshop.” Always double-check your answer choices before saving!

Step 4: Save and Preview

Once all the choices are entered:

  • Review the combined feedback settings. By default, messages like “Your answer is correct” or “Your answer is incorrect” are already there — you can customize them if you want.
  • Click Save Changes.
  • Use the Preview button (the little magnifying glass icon) to see how your question will appear to students. Check that:
    • Choices are shuffled.
    • Only one option can be selected.
    • The correct answer is set properly.

Final Result

When students view the question, they’ll see the shuffled choices, and they’ll only be allowed to select one answer. If they select Adobe Illustrator, they’ll receive full marks for that question.

And that’s it! 🎉
You’ve successfully added a multiple-choice question with one correct answer to your quiz.

Whether you’re building a course quiz, a knowledge check, or a certification exam, this method ensures your quizzes are structured and easy for students to navigate.
